IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

RABIES in Animals and Humans

Rabies is a viral disease that can affect all mammals including dogs, cats and humans. Unfortunately, there is currently no known treatment or cure for rabies. There is however an effective vaccination program for your dog and cat that can provide pre-exposure immunity against the virus and can help to limit the severity and spread of this deadly disease to humans. All young animals from the age of three months should be vaccinated, followed by a booster vaccination between 2 and 9 months later. Thereafter an annual booster vaccination should be given lifelong to maintain immunity.

The Rabies Virus
Is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal mainly through bites, scratches or licks
Affects the brain and is fatal once a person or animal shows clinical signs
Is characterised by symptoms in animals such as drooling saliva, paralysis, changes in behaviour including aggression, exaggerated response to sound and light, muscle spasms and convulsions and continuous barking, whining and howling
Poses a primary threat to human health mainly through infected dogs and cats
Rabies in humans
Humans can contract the rabies virus. There is also no known cure for rabies in humans. If a person is ever bitten, scratched or licked by a rabid dog or any other animal suspected of having rabies, the bite wound should be allowed to bleed and should be rinsed profusely with water and cleaned with a germicidal agent.  They also need to be seen immediately by a medical doctor.

Important: South Africa is considered a rabies endemic area, and all dogs and cats are required to be vaccinated by law.

To assist in controlling this deadly disease, the Vets at Florandia Animal Clinic, 790 Punctata street, Tileba, will offer a discount on Rabies vaccinations for the next three months. Please feel free to contact them at 012 565 5597 or bring your animal to be vaccinated.
